MOTORCYCLE VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) PLATES, steering column stamped & engine stamped.
The serial number is the same stamped on steering column, on VIN plate and stamped on the Engine upper case (excepted in Japan, where only the 3 first numbers/letter are stamped on the engine case).
In Brazil, Canada & USA frame number is different but type and serial number are included in:
USA example Chassis: JYA48H00 X FA000101 -> 48H-000101 on engine
CANADA example JYA33E00 X EA000101 -> 33E-000101 on engine
Brazil example Chassis YA 9C62UA005J000101 -> 2UA-000101 on engine

These plates had 2 functions: idendity the motorcycle by a unique serial number and show as well that it complies with the legislation of the country where the motorcycle is sold. In Europe, the number like DGM 51155 was given on those plates for Italy or on a second plate. See against the certification file (from Italy) of this DGM. For Belgium it's the P.V.A Nr.

In Europe and Australia it was aluminum plates but in Switzerland, USA and Canada, it was stickers. For RD350LC 4L0 model in UK, there was no VIN plate.
Those plate were on the headstock from '80 to '84 and from '85 to '91 on the Right Hand side frame rail under the tank.
